Dry Sphagnum Moss is a lightweight, natural material suitable for terrariums, vivariums, orchids, ferns and other moisture-loving plants. Its soft, fibrous structure helps retain moisture while maintaining air spaces around plant roots, making it useful as a substrate component, barrier layer or decorative top covering.

How to Prepare

Before use, place the required amount of dry sphagnum moss in clean water and allow it to soak for approximately 15 minutes.

Rinse gently to remove loose dust or debris. After soaking, lightly squeeze out excess water. The moss should remain moist but should not be dripping wet.

Recommended Uses

Drainage Barrier:
Place a thin layer between the drainage section and terrarium substrate. A typical setup can be:

Gravel/Stones → Activated Charcoal → Sphagnum Moss → Terrarium Soil → Plants & Decoration

Approximately 1–2 cm of sphagnum moss is generally sufficient as a separating layer.

Substrate Mix:
Mix sphagnum moss with suitable terrarium soil, cocopeat or other substrate materials to improve moisture retention and aeration.

Top Dressing:
Place small pieces over the soil surface to create a natural woodland appearance while helping the surface retain moisture.

Root Wrapping:
Can be used around the roots of suitable plants such as orchids and ferns where additional moisture retention is required.

Care Tips

• Avoid keeping the moss excessively wet for long periods.
• Provide suitable ventilation or occasional fresh-air exchange.
• Remove any mold or deteriorated material when noticed.
• Rehydrate dry moss before using it around plant roots or in substrate.
• Avoid using excessively thick layers, as too much retained moisture may reduce airflow around roots.

Lifespan

The usable life of dried sphagnum moss depends on humidity, watering, ventilation and biological activity inside the enclosure. Under suitable conditions, it may remain usable for approximately 6 months to 2 years.

Replace the moss when it becomes heavily decomposed, excessively dark, slimy or develops persistent mold.
